Merle Maurer
Merle Maurer of Hershey, PA and formerly of Winter Haven FL and Osceola Mills, PA; a proud Veteran and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of September 1, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 98 years old.
Born on April 28, 1926, in Tyrone, PA to the late Josephine Robenolt, Merle grew up in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Tyrone High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call of duty and joined the Army Air Corps during World War II, serving as a tail gunner in the iconic B-29 Super Fortress. In addition to his mother, Merle was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Maurer.
Merle’s dedication and bravery earned him an assignment with the 315th Bomb Wing of the 20th Air Force. Throughout his military career, he was awarded numerous commendations, including the Army Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal for his service during World War II.
After being honorably discharged in 1948, the year the Army Air Corps was re-designated as the United States Air Force, Merle returned to the Tyrone area. He eventually settled in Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania, where he worked at a brickyard in Sandy Ridge, PA, before finding his long-term career as a Correctional Officer at Rockview Correctional Facility. Merle retired from this role, having earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Merle’s life was marked by his unwavering sense of duty, commitment to his country, and love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He married Ruth E. Stone on October 4, 1957, in Winchester, VA; she survives at home. Merle is also survived by three sons, William B. Maurer & his wife Malee J. of Harrisburg, PA, Dirk E. Maurer & his wife Lynne M. of Palmyra, PA, and Miles C. Maurer & his wife Shelly R. of Philipsburg, PA; and two grandchildren Muranda R. Maurer Burns and her husband Tyler and Collin C. Maurer and one great-grandchild Owen S. Burns.
Merle’s family was by his side until the end, honoring his life and legacy. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024, at Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services, LLC, 701 Lingle St., Osceola Mills, PA. Rev James Evilsizor will officiate. Burial will be at Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills, PA.
Visitation will be held Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Osceola Mills Honor Guard at the cemetery.
