I am so very sorry for your loss. I loved your mom very much, and I will miss her terribly. She was one of my oldest and dearest friends. I will be praying for you.

We have been friends since the 4th grade. We laughed, we cried, we went thru the horrible adolescent years together. Our lives went in different directions and I am ashamed to admit that years went by that we didnt talk. Not because we were mad, but we took the time we had for granted.. But when we did talk, the years melted away. The world is a lesser place today for all those who knew Darlene, and I am a better person for being able to have had the privilege to call her friend for the last 45 years. God speed my friend.. there are no words to express how much I will miss you.

She was a wonderful, caring, loving, fun person with a heart of gold (and the list goes on and on) that I got the pleasure of knowing. She was my cosmetology teacher 93-95. She was an amazing teacher as well a friend. She always had the answer no matter what the question was. And believe me we always had questions ….And years later she taught my daughter as well…She left a big imprint in my heart as well as my daughter.. She will be dearly missed…My deepest sympathy with love and prayers for all….

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Ms Smolko was a wonderful, loving teacher. She was my instructor from 1991-94. I also would go in to visit her every year after to get service. She would sit there and talk to me about what was going on and what we did. Ms Smolko… You will be greatly missed!! You were a wonderful teacher, we always had lots of fun in your class!!

Dear Darlene’s family, the loss of Darlene has created a great void in everyone’s heart that knew. She truly was an awesome soul and will be missed by all her friends and family. I, myself, will now not have her to bust me about the moon landing and any other thing she could tease me about. We were like brother and sister, tormenting each other, but with love and affection. I will miss her very much. Dear Darlene rest in peace with the angels.

Mike, Mike Jr and family,
Darlene was such a special soul. She was an inspiration to so many people. She was my “partner in crime” busting Joe’s chops every chance we got. There was never a time that we were together that I was not laughing and enjoying her company. I remember the time Joe and I went to the Outer Banks on vacation with your family and Mike, you and I bet her and Joe that they couldn’t keep from talking for even 10 minutes. They both gave a valiant effort but in about 5 minutes Darlene started writing as quickly as she could. Joe ultimately won the bet even though she insisted that writing was not talking. She will be missed by so many people. She left us way too early and has left a great void in anyone’s life who knew her. My heartfelt condolences to your family. Cindy

Mike and Michael,

I am very sorry for your loss. I have so many wonderful memories of Darlene and I am forever grateful for the self confidence she instilled in myself and all her students. She had asked (kind of forced, just kidding) some of us in her class to join and compete in VICA. This was the best thing I ever did! To this very day almost 22 years later, I still say Vo-Tech saved my life. I still remember babysitting Michael and being afraid of the Siamese cat you guys had at the time. Just know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. If there is anything you need please let me know!

To the family:
I’m sure it was quite a shock to you but greatly a shock to me to see this. Darlene was a wonderful person and always cared for all her students. I had the privledge of having her in school 07-09 and she always pushed and motivated me to do my best. She was a great teacher/ friend! She helped me get ready for my Boards outside of school which she didn’t have to do but she did. She was very encouraging for me to open my Own salon and I have had it for a handful of years.. I have a memory that I’ll hold on to forever! I hated finger waves and pin curls But mostly Finger waves and she made me do them all the time! She made up a song about me and finger waves and I have it! she liked having fun and loved her family very much! She loved and enjoyed her DJ business as well! So very sorry for your loss of a wonderful lady! Prayers for healing and strength!
