Nellie A. Mekis
Nellie A. Mekis, age 97, formerly of Osceola Mills, died December 20, 2013 at Windy Hill Village. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Osceola Mills, PA on Friday December, 27, 2013 at 10 am, Rev. Father Robert Horgas, celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, December 26 from 5 pm. to 8 pm at Heath Funeral Home in Osceola Mills and a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.
Mrs. Mekis was born on October 28, 1916 in Osceola Mills, PA, the daughter of the late Frank and Veronica (Moroz) Yokobosky,. She married George Mekis on June 8, 1940 in Osceola Mills, PA and resided most of her life in Osceola Mills.
Mrs. Mekis worked for Charles Navaskys & Co. as a serger for many years and retired at the age of 64. After her husband’s death, March 18, 1965 due to a mining accident, she devoted her life to raising her children and grandchildren. At the age of 90, Mrs. Mekis moved to Dayspring Personal Care Home in Forest and remained there for 6 years. After a lengthy illness, in April of this year, she moved to Windy Hill Village.
She is survived by 2 sons, George Mekis Jr. & his wife Carol and John Mekis & his wife Marianne, both of Osceola Mills, 2 daughters, Carol Jansen & her husband Bob of Fenton, MI and Eileen Keller & her husband Barry of Kylertown, PA, 17 grandchildren 34 great grandchildren, 15 great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mekis and a daughter Frances “Cookie” Merryman. Also preceding her in death: parents, Frank and Veronica Yakobosky, 3 brothers and 4 sisters, Genevive (Bruno) Dembowski, Tony (Sophie) Yokobosky, Steve (Mary) Yokobosky, Sophie (Joe) Casebolt, Frances (Louie) Quesada, Jean (Martin) Olosky, Joe (Angie) Yokobosky, and brother-in-law Joe Durish, Mother and Father in-law Michael (Anna) Mekis, brothers and sisters-in-law Ann (George) Karsnak, Joe (Mary) Mekis, Antonette (Andy) Bezilla, Steve (Betty) Mekis, John (Ann) Mekis and Mary (Joe) Lawskosky.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Dayspring Personal Care Home, Windy Hill Village and Horizons Hospice for the loving care their mother received.
