Correctional people are different because our jobs capture and absorb us so that there is nothing in our world except prison. And among us there are those who rise up and make an immediate difference and a lasting impression-like Wayne. He was energetic, fair, friendly and fun loving. Eneregtic-he moved through the jail like a whirlwind, going from one probelm to another and letting his presence be known. Who was that new lieutenant who was in C Block when the other white hats were loafing in the DW Building? There are was Wayne as emergency lieutenant in the middle of the first juvenile fight in B Block. And, within a few days as his debut as day shift commander, he somehow solved the problem of the delayed count when the best of minds had failed. Fair and really too fair–I remember when he was a union steward at Rockview arguing with him over the discipline of of one of the most notorious jerks in all prison-dom, and yet Wayne took an unpopular stance because he thought it was the right thing to do. Friendly–and I might add compassionate. It was Wayne as night shift commander who allowed an officer under chemotherapy sleep during night shift. It was Wayne as a sergeant at Rockview who had a bunch of Dallas inmates fresh from a disturbance dumped on his block. These hostile guys were amazed that here was a reasonable officer who neither shouted at them nor ingnored their needs–and because of Wayne we never had a problem with any of them. Fun loving: his singing, I might add his awful but enthusiastic singing, at a wedding reception at Christ the King. It was with amusement and prison canny that during the Anthrax crisis he huffed powder out of an evelope in the L-2, having gone there when the inmates panicked over a letter. “If I’m not dead in a an hour or so,” he advised them, “you will know that there is nothing to fear.” He solved that problem to the admiration of the frightened inmates–but guess what, the letter had been mailed from the post office In Washington, D.C. from which the real Anthrax letters had been sent. And so I remember Wayne fondly–as always in motion, as always optimistic and cheerful, as an integral member of a commissioned officer’s team that was the best I ever experienced. I like to think that as the Gospel says, we are there in a “twinkling,” that one moment we are here and then we are there. I know Wayne’s faith was great–who would pray over a prison meal?-and that he is there and in the midst of whatever needs doing. God Bless, God Speed, and Good Hunting

What can I say that everyone else hasn’t said. Our hearts and prayers go out to the whole family. Wayne is a great role model to follow for his grandsons. He was kind, courteous and made friends with everyone. He was one of the hardest workers I ever worked with. If you needed anything he would jump in to help you. I will surely miss him as all will. Most men are either categorized as good guys or not so good guys. Wayne was a great guy whom served as a mentor to me when I was a 21 year old Correctional Officer at SCI Rockview. Wayne taught me a lot of things over the years. He was a great teacher and also a great leader. When I left Rockview for the PA State Police, Wayne’s advice to me… “don’t ever forget when you came from” . Well dear friend, I never forgot and I can’t thank you enough for the wisdom you gave to me at that old prison. RIP SGT. Jones, I will never forget you!! My deepest condolences to the Jones Family.

Our beautiful brother was called home. We are holding Pam, his wife, and his children and grand children and great grandchild and each other as his siblings close and tight in love and prayer. Words do not exist to describe the bittersweet nature of saying good-bye to anyone we love, and the words I offer are that we as his family gather close to honor his life and legacy.

Wayne was an outstanding person and corrections officer. He was always willing to help a less experienced officer perform his duties correctly. I was very sad to hear of his death.
He loved his wife, Pam, very much, as well as his children. My thoughts and prayers are with Pam and the rest of his family.
Keep his memory alive by frequently remembering the good times you had with him and tell others of the happiness he brought forth.
He helped me a great deal with my corrections career and I will always be indebted to him.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the Jones family.
Scott and Colleen Woodring
Our thoughts go out to the entire family. Wayne possessed so many dynamic qualities as a leader and the imprint he left on us “newbies” that started at SCI Houtzdale was immeasurable. Of all those qualities, it was his warmth and essential humanness in a very difficult environment that evoked widespread affection for him. The world lost a good man but so many fond memories will remain as part of his legacy. Rest in peace.

I was a law enforcement, and Vietnam Nam veteran where I came from, but a rookie when I reported to B Block South, in 1990. Sgt Jones was a mentor and inspiration to me. Truly, as the saying goes. Only the good die young. See you on the other side brother…
