Jean (Mott) Butterworth
Jean (Mott) Butterworth, 87, of Philipsburg, died peacefully at home on Sunday, December 4, 2022.
Jean was born on June 19, 1935, in Osceola Mills, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Julia (Dancho) Mott.
She was married to her husband, Ronald C. Butterworth for over 60 years.
Jean was a member of Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Osceola Mills, Pa, where she served on the Ladies Altar Guild. Along with other church members she loved cooking and baking ethnic food specialties and hosting events.
Jean also belonged to the Philipsburg NOP Club for many years and was a member of the Philipsburg Elks Lodge, #1173 where most recently she could be found playing cards with her friends. She also served in various roles at the Slovak Workingmen’s Club and the AMVETS over the years.
Jean attended Philipsburg School of Nursing and after graduating in 1955 as an RN, she spent the majority of her career as an Operating Room Nurse at the Philipsburg State General Hospital where she eventually retired.
She was a 1952 graduate of the former Osceola Mills High School.
In high school, Jean played the clarinet in district band and she loved music like her father who played in an orchestra. Jean and her sisters spent many hours as waitresses working in the family business – Mott’s Diner. As a mother and grandmother, she was completely devoted to her family. She enjoyed camping, beach vacations, tending her flower garden and was a big fan of the PSU football and wrestling teams. Jean valued the many friendships she made over the years – she loved being around people and entertaining – no one left her kitchen table with an empty stomach.
Jean is survived by two sisters, Joan Mott and her husband, Joe Hancock, of Indiana Pa and Julia Kerr, of Lansing, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Suzanne “Suzi” Marley and Suzanne’s husband, Norman Marley.
Jean is survived by two children and their respective families: a son, Michael “Mike” Butterworth, his wife, Shelly and one granddaughter, Marlee Rose; a daughter, Tamara “Tammy” Dunkley and two granddaughters, Alexandra Jane O’Neil and her husband, Christopher, and Nicole Dunkley.
Through Tammy’s marriage to Peter Reifer, Jean has 4 grown step-grandchildren and 8 step-great grandchildren. Heidi and Rob Krawczak and their son, Brennan; Aaron and Megan Reifer, and their sons, Rocco and Cash; Melissa Reifer and Brett Passmore, and their son, Milo and daughter, Madelyn; and Norma Reifer and her sons, Wyatt and Peter and her daughter, Rosie.
